Why a practice log matters
The single biggest predictor of musical progress is not talent, instrument quality, or hours per session — it's how consistently you show up. Research on deliberate practice, popularised by K. Anders Ericsson and refined by every credible coach since, consistently lands on the same finding: thirty minutes a day, every day, beats a four-hour weekend marathon every time. The brain consolidates motor patterns during sleep, and you only get that compounding if you actually sleep between sessions. A practice tracker exists to make that consistency visible — and to remove the excuse that "I think I practised this week" when the calendar quietly disagrees.
A useful practice log records more than minutes. The minutes tell you whether you showed up; the goals tell you whether you made progress. "I played for 30 minutes" is honest but meaningless three weeks later, when you're trying to remember whether the C-shape barre chord ever clicked. "30 minutes, barre-chord drill on the 5th fret, two clean changes out of ten" is data — the kind that lets you compare yesterday to today and decide what to work on next. The 90-day heatmap pairs with the streak: it shows your week-over-week pattern, exposes the days you reliably skip, and lets you plan around them. If Friday is always empty, schedule Friday as ten minutes instead of pretending you'll do your usual thirty.
How to use this tool well: start small — five minutes a day for two weeks before you raise the bar. Log honestly, including short or bad sessions; a logged five-minute session is a real data point, an unlogged thirty-minute session is a story. Review weekly, every Sunday, and pick one goal tag to push the following week. How to use the tracker

Pick the date, your instrument, and the duration. Add tags for what you worked on (barre chords, blues scale, song X) and a note if something stood out. The whole entry takes 15 seconds.
- Step 2Build the streak
Practice every day, even five minutes counts. The streak counter rewards consistency, not duration — and the calendar heatmap turns your habit into a visible pattern you don't want to break.
- Step 3Review your week
Use the stats panel to see weekly minutes, average per day, and your most-played instrument over the last 30 days. If your average is dropping, raise it before the streak slips.
- Step 4Adjust and repeat
Look at your goal tags after a week. Are you avoiding the hard one? Move it to the top of the next session. Practice tracking only works if it changes what you do tomorrow.
Frequently asked questions
- Where is my data stored?
- Every session you log lives in your browser's localStorage on this device only. Tunory never sees it. There is no account, no upload, no backup server — the practice tracker is a private notebook that just happens to render in a browser tab.
- What if I clear my browser?
- If you clear browser data, site data, or cookies for tunory.io, your practice log is deleted with it. The same is true if you switch to a private/incognito window. We surface this prominently because it's the most common reason people lose history. If you rely on long-term records, copy your data out periodically — a Premium export-to-CSV feature is on the roadmap.
- Can I sync to another device?
- Not on the free tier. Cross-device sync requires a server, an account, and an authentication boundary, all of which we plan to ship as a Premium feature once Cloud Sync is ready. Until then, the tracker is intentionally device-local — fast, private, and free.
- Is this really free?
- Yes. The whole tracker is free with no daily caps, no signup, and no ads above the fold. Tunory's premium tier adds Cloud Sync, unlimited history beyond 90 days, CSV export, and weekly goal tracking, but those are upgrades, not unlocks. The free version stands on its own.
