About Baritone DGBE on ukulele

Baritone ukulele tuning is DGBE, low to high — D3, G3, B3, E4. These are the same pitches as the top four strings of a standard guitar. The baritone is the largest member of the ukulele family, with a longer scale length (around 19 inches vs. the soprano's 13) that lets the lower D and G strings ring fully. Unlike soprano, concert, and tenor ukes, the baritone is not re-entrant — its fourth string is the lowest, just like a guitar.

Because the tuning matches the top four guitar strings, every chord shape a guitarist already knows transfers directly. The G chord on a baritone uke is the same fingering as the G chord on the top four strings of a guitar; the C, D, Em, and Am shapes likewise. This makes the baritone an unusually approachable instrument for any guitarist — the only adjustment is the smaller scale and the missing low E and A strings.

The baritone has a warmer, more guitar-like voice than smaller ukuleles. Where a soprano sings with brightness, the baritone speaks with depth. It is most common in folk, jazz, and singer-songwriter contexts where the player wants the ukulele's rhythmic compactness with a slightly lower register. A long lineage of jazz and Hawaiian players has used baritones for chord-melody work because the wider intervallic range supports both bass notes and melody on the same instrument.

If you are coming from guitar, baritone uke is the easiest possible entry point. Pick it up and play any guitar chord using the top four strings — it will sound right. If you are coming from a smaller ukulele, expect re-learning: every chord shape is different. The C major chord that you played on the third fret of the A string on a soprano is now on the fifth fret of the third string on a baritone. Treat the baritone as a related but distinct instrument.

Frequently asked questions

Will I need different strings for a baritone ukulele?
Yes — buy a baritone-specific set. The strings are thicker than soprano/concert/tenor strings to support the longer scale and lower pitches.
Are baritone ukulele chords the same as guitar chords?
The top four strings are tuned identically to a guitar, so any chord shape on a guitar's top four strings works unchanged on a baritone.
Can I play soprano ukulele songs on a baritone?
The chord shapes are different. A soprano-tuned uke is in GCEA, baritone is in DGBE — the relative interval pattern is similar but the actual pitches are a fourth apart.
Why does baritone sound deeper than other ukuleles?
The lowest open string is D3, which is a fifth below the lowest open string of a re-entrant standard ukulele's middle C (C4). The longer body and scale also support more low-end resonance.
How do I quickly switch back to standard from a different baritone tuning?
Bring the four strings to D3, G3, B3, E4 with a chromatic tuner. These pitches match the top four strings of a guitar, so a guitar tuner works equally well.
